Altos Las Hormigas (Mendoza)
Since ALH's humble beginnings in 1995 Alberto Antonini recognised the potential of Malbec as 'The Grape' of Mendoza. It was in this year that Antonini, a well-known Tuscan winemaker and former head winemaker at Antinori, and Antonio Morescalchi, a young entrepreneur, decided to explore the major viticultural areas of Argentina, to look for investment opportunities.
They returned powerfully impressed by Mendoza vineyards, and with an impression of a place where traditional viticultural values could be reinvigorated with a modern winemaking approach, to produce a wine of unique personality.
In December 1995, 216 hectares of land were bought in the district of Carrizal de Abajo in the department of Luján de Cuyo.
Shortly after, three long-term friends and business partners, also enthused by the idea, joined the enterprise: Attilio Pagli, a renowned Tuscan winemaker with two 100 point-scoring wines in his personal record; Alan Scerbanenko, an Italo-Swiss management councillor; and Antonio Terni, an Italo-Argentine Bob Dylan aficionado who produces top quality wines in the Marche region of Italy. Carlos Vazquez, who assisted Altos from the very beginning with his lifelong experience managing vineyards in Mendoza, joined the team on a full time basis in 2000.
