A high altitude vineyard standing at 1,800 feet in the Piccidally Valley. This Steep East facing vineyard with mature vines was planted to a mix of MV6, 114 & 115 clones. This cold location and aspect protect the vines from the afternoon sun resulting in a much later ripening vineyard and provides extraordinary conditions to produce premium Pinot Noir of great elegance, vibrancy and structure.
The wine was made with extraordinary care, each clone was hand picked and fermented separately without the addition of yeast. Retaining whole berries and the inclusion of roughly 50% whole bunches with gentle pump over’s help to retain elegance and show the purity of the vineyard. The juice spends almost two weeks on the skins. It is then gently pressed to predominantly older French oak barrels to mature the wine for a period of 9 months to retain the vibrant fruit characters. The best barrels were selected for this limited wine before the wine was bottled without fining or filtration.
2014 was a year of loads of heat, then plenty of rain, then mild overcast conditions – an interesting year for Adelaide Hills to say the least. "The cooler period worked well as a building period. The tannins are particularly interesting from this year", says Michael. "Often Adelaide Hills Pinot Noir is cast aside as ‘dry reddish’, we work a bit gentler, and I can see small pockets in the Hills that we’re working with that will produce high quality Pinot Noir. I tend to think we’re making a wine away from that dry reddish image."
Brilliant red. Pungent red berries and dried flowers on the incisive, spice-accented nose. Chewy, focused and light on its feet, offering bitter cherry, redcurrant and spicecake flavors and an exotic hint of five-spice powder. This concentrated yet lithe Pinot Noir boasts powerful closing thrust and persistence, with fine-grained tannins lending shape.
