Bindi
'Quartz'
Chardonnay
Macedon Ranges

‘Quartz’ is from the original plantings in 1988 and grown on solely where the quartz incidence in the soil is the greatest giving the fruit extra complexity, finesse and intensity. This wine is emphatically a statement of its exact origin as well as being expressive of variety, handling and region. Here the somewhereness of terroir, has full voice.

This area is approximately half one hectare in size. The characteristics are similar in the Quartz Chardonnay to the ‘Kostas Rind’ Chardonnay but all aspects are amplified here yet remain in complete harmony. The winemaking is the same for both wines however the Quartz Chardonnay sometimes spends a few months longer in barrel and there is a higher percentage of new wood used, being around 35%.

From the top section of the chardonnay blocks planted in 1988 the Quartz is always more laid back and brooding than 'Kostas Rind' It is a deeply complex yet restrained wine. Mineral and citrus aromas as well as complex spices are evident on the nose. The palate is outstanding in its richness and volume. It is such a powerful and textural wine that is compellingly mouth filling, balanced and incredibly long. This wine will have a very long life and it will continue to develop more complexity and texture!

The vital statistics that appear below show the critical importance of correct vineyard site location in the almost glacial climate of the region's south-east. This sprawling, hilly and windswept area extends from the Lancefield-Macedon... Learn More »

MACEDON RANGES

The Australian wine world, unlike most of Europe, is based upon regional blends as wines. In the past ten to twenty years, a few remarkable individuals started the trend of making individualistic wines from specific sites. Such examples are Henschke's Hill of Grace Shiraz in the Eden Valley, Jasper Hill's Emily's Paddock in Heathcote and the Wendouree wines of the Clare Valley. These are wines that come from a certain site, terroir driven wines made by terroirists. Learn More »
