Pinot Noir
Adelaide Hills

The vinous equivalent of Swaby Chardonnay’s affluent husband, Gower Pinot Noir is the kind of wealthy that makes other men seethe. He is resolutely impossible to despise. Confident and commanding, a disciplined and masterful athlete, dashing in a well-tailored suit, quick with a warm smile and a clever retort and never short of generous advice or the use of his yacht. After a year of nothing but gains to his portfolio, he summers at his family villa on the Côte d’Or wandering his own vines and scheming a brilliant future.

Among the highest reaches in the Hills, Lenswood has the ability to create Pinot Noir both with focus and richness as the area has long hang times available. Brendon has the Gower Vineyard down pat producing two different wines from this site; as Skin ‘n Bones also comes from Gower. BK has longed for this site for some time and there was never any fruit available. Now enter the historically difficult 2011 vintage and many winemakers bowed out with Brendon accepting the challenge. This is his fourth campaign of working with this great site.

Hailing from a vintage of abundance in every possible direction – from bumper yields to exceptional quality – Gower 2015 maintains this wine’s enviable reputation for Pinot perfection. Entirely native yeast fermented with 70% of the fruit fermented whole-cluster and pressed off of skins after 25 days to 30% new French barrique and puncheons where it is left to wait patiently for 11 months. As always, unfined and unfiltered.

Distinctive varietal raspberry, sour cherry and strawberry creaminess on the nose is punctuated by the pomander-ball spiciness of ripe oranges pricked with cloves and the umami tang of shiitake mushrooms. The palate is classic, delicate, elegant Old World Pinot Noir – power without density. Gentle, fine tannins and bright, open fruit characteristics with just a hint of campari bitters. A satisfyingly complete Pinot Noir.
