Le Ragnaie
Brunello di Montalcino DOCG

Elegance, that is the heartbeat of Le Ragnaie's wines. Vigneron Riccardo Campinoti has rapidly ascended the ranks of a stoic and timeless region. This vintage marked a return to finesse and enticing aromas for Brunello producers even through harsh conditions. Winter was cold and wet while summer was extremely hot and dry, marked by late rains. Although this may seem challenging, producers simply adapted by picking a bit earlier to retain acid levels, for example. Clusters and berries were also small which is ideal for Sangiovese.

The fruit hails from four organically farmed estate vineyards with the Ragnaie estate comprising 66% of the blend. The other three sites are Petroso, a vineyard next to Soldera that adds structure and texture to the final assemblage, Fornace and Loreto. The fruit juice sits on skins for 40 days in concrete fermenters before being racked to 25hL and 50hL Slavonian botti for 36 months of aging. The resulting wine is one that Burgundy and Barolo lovers may fall in love with before many Sangiovese lovers but make no mistake, this is Brunello.

Aromas of forest floor, baked plum, clove and a balsamic whiff of eucalyptus lead the nose. The firmly structured palate offers fleshy wild cherry, raspberry, star anise, tobacco and nutmeg alongside chewy tannins.

Winery & Regional Information

Aside from perhaps Bordeaux, Napa Valley and Champagne, no other province in the world is as revered as that of the area in and around Siena in the hills of Tuscany. A multitude of macro and meso climates abound with many different exposures. Here Sangiovese masquerades in many costumes as a jovial jester in Chianti Colli Senesi with its approachable... Le Ragnaie is a breath of fresh air to what has been a relatively stale time frame in Montalcino. Riccardo and Jennifer Campinoti purchased the property with a mix of old vines and younger plantings. The estate spreads accross 42 acres, 12 acres of which are in the zone where the cellars are based, Le Ragnaie itself. These vines are the highest of any in Montalcino, some reaching above the DOCG mandated 1,960 feet above sea level, south facing in the central zone above Soldera di Case Basse. As one of the highest points in the region it became famous... Learn More »
