Syrah
Stellenbosch

Syrah is a grape that Mick and Jeanine have a soft spot for. They believe there are very special and unique sites and plantings of Syrah in Stellenbosch so they decided to make two Syrahs from two different soil types to showcase what Syrah can do in this region. The third edition is from a warmer site in the Devon Valley. It is planted on a very rich, deep, red soil with high clay content.

This wine is fermented in the exact same manner as the Faure Syrah. The grapes are left 100% whole bunch, and lightly stomped to extract a little juice. Very gentle pumpovers are performed once or twice daily, as Mick wants to minimise extraction and maintain as many whole bunches as possible. 2017 was pressed off after 9 days on skins into old puncheons for 10 months.

The wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered, with nothing added during the winemaking process apart from a dash of sulphur.

CRAVEN WINES

STELLENBOSCH

Craven Wines is a winemaking collaboration between husband-and-wife team Mick and Jeanine Craven.  Mick is an Aussie currently working as lead winemaker at Mulderbosch during the day;  Jeanine is South African, and they met in California 'dragging hoses' in Sonoma for harvest in 2007.  After both having taken to the text books at their respective universities, they decided to hit the road, see lots of things, work in lots of places and try and learn as much as possible from this massive wine world.  After travelling across the world together for four years and learning about wines in Australia, Europe...
