As an Aussie, Syrah is a grape that Mick has a very soft spot for. Unlike many of the 'Shiraz' that he made while at Uni in Adelaide, this wine has more in common with the 'new wave' of Australia or better yet Cornas. He believes there are some really special and unique sites planted to Syrah in Stellenbosch. The second edition is from a block quite close to the Pinot Noir block in the Faure area. In 2015 the Cravens produced two Syrahs adding 'The Firs' to the family.

The Faure site is on an easterly aspect facing the Helderberg Mountain. It's proximity to the ocean (less than two miles) means it receives a consistent afternoon sea breeze cooling off during the growing season. Like most of the red wines, Mick is judicious in the use of whole bunch fermentation. This was fermented 100% whole bunches in stainless steel open tops. Very gentle pumpovers were all this wine received, to minimize extraction and maintain as many whole bunches as possible. The 2017 vintage was pressed off after 10 days on skins into old puncheons for 10 months.

The wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered, with nothing added during the winemaking process apart from a dash of sulphur.

STELLENBOSCH

Craven Wines is a winemaking collaboration between husband-and-wife team Mick and Jeanine Craven.  Mick is an Aussie currently working as lead winemaker at Mulderbosch during the day;  Jeanine is South African, and they met in California 'dragging hoses' in Sonoma for harvest in 2007.  After both having taken to the text books at their respective universities, they decided to hit the road, see lots of things, work in lots of places and try and learn as much as possible from this massive wine world.  After travelling across the world together for four years and learning about wines in Australia, Europe...
