The Pyren cuvée is cropped off Leighton Joy's 'Pyren Vineyard' in Warrenmang, planted in 1995. This south-facing vineyard occupies a unique site within the region, with the east/west plantings rooted in shallow red and brown loams over a red clay/loam subsoil, laced with a considerable amount of quartz and pink feldspar granite. The low-fertility Syrah vines here have become known for their small bunches and berries. This site is also managed by viticultural guru Graeme Miles, whose sheep run through the vineyard during the winter/autumn months.

Although it's essentially a warm, south-facing site, when you get the picking dates right, Pyren's fruit is wonderfully exuberant and balanced by keen, juicy acidity. 100% whole bunch fermentation, 40 day extended maceration, indigenous yeast, racked to one and two year old French puncheons, sur lees for 15 months, gravity racked and bottled unfined and unfiltered. No acid, enzymes or additives other than a small amount of sulfur dioxide was used in production.

The darkest, most brooding of all the Jamsheed wines – savory and powerful. Possesses a similar aromatic spectrum to the ‘Seville’ (licorice, lack fruits), but carries greater intensity and far more mineral character that speaks proudly of the quartz laced pink granitic soil it hails from. Again, tastes of minerals and black fruits, finishing with impressively fine, long tannin. This is a beast of a wine, yet carries its power with such finesse and balance.

JAMSHEED WINES

YARRA VALLEY

Ancient writings tell an endearing tale of Jamsheed, a Persian king who was said to be able to see his kingdom in a cup of wine, and whose fondness for fresh grapes lead him to store them in jars over winter where they would inevitably spontaneously ferment and be set aside as ‘poison’.
