Grenache
Bot River

Francois named his first vintage of 100% Grenache after his son, so obviously it is amazing! Ironically, the very first red wine he made under the Blackwater label was the 2010 'Noir' which consisted of 60% Syrah and 40% Grenache. The Grenache came from same vineyard used for the 'Daniel' Syrah. Though the vines are young, it is farmed organically (certified) and the root structure sets the table for outstanding intensity of fruit. After all of these years, Francois had a strong desire to make a varietal Grenache, but a suitable site had yet to be discovered. After revisiting the 'Noir' Grenache site in Bot River, he knew it would be worthy enough for 'Daniel'.

The juice undergoes spontaneous fermentation with 40% being a whole cluster component. Following fermentation, the juice remains on skins for 3 weeks, then transferred to 300L old French oak until bottling. No fining or filtering.

BLACKWATER WINES

STELLENBOSCH

Blackwater Wine is the brainchild of Francois Haasbroek, a man that is unequivocally part of the bright future of South African wine. Francois completed his schooling in Stellenbosch, surrounded by vineyards, mountains and food.  After enrolling at Stellenbosch University and graduating with a bachelor's degree in science – viticulture and oenology, he did his first stint as a 'cellar rat' at Neil Ellis wines in 2002, 2003 and 2004. The travel bug bit and the need to see how others do what they do led to his first stop: California, where he worked at Dry Creek Vineyard in Sonoma in 2003. Learn More »
