Chenin Blanc

Chenin Blanc

This is the wine that really defines Intellego. Jurgen has a serious affinity for bush vine Chenin as the grapes compete with one another for ripeness, which doesn't happen to this level with trellised vines. There is an intensity to old, bush vine fruit that when harvested at the right time really shines.

This is a 50/50 blend of two parcels in the Swartland. One granitic site in Paardeberg and the other being sandy clay over gravel in the southern hills of Swartland facing Cape Town.

The bush vines on the granite site are dry-farmed and planted in 1974. It is yielding on average 1.3 tons/acre and situated on an East facing slope with a lot of early morning sun during Spring and Summer assisting in early ripening. The top layers of the soil are very sandy and well drained contributing to the fresher, “mineral” style. Due to low yield there are always a high concentration in the small bunches that give excellent texture together with poor soil that lifts the intensity of the wine.

The gravel parcel is on a more clay based soil (oakleaf) with aerolean sand on top of the gravel adding freshness to the blend and a lovely floral character. The bush vines are farmed dry land on an East facing slope. On average at least 7ºF cooler than the granite parcel and thus ripening 2 weeks later. It yields on average 1.5 tons/acre and was planted in 1980.

The grapes are hand-harvested and pressed whole bunch straight into a mixture of neutral French barriques and puncheons. They age 10 months on the gross lees and racked only once two days before bottling. It is bottled unfined and unfiltered.

A lovely Chenin combining richness and complexity. High-toned aromas of rich pear, apples with roasted hazlenuts. Bright, juicy and concentrated with plenty of mouthwatering acidity keeping everything reeled in. Hints of citrus fruits on the palate bring a more linear dimension than the nose shows. Great breadth for a wine with such a light, deft touch.

Intellego Wines started off in 2009 as funds from winemaker/founder, Jurgen Gouws' Russian harvest trip as well as selling second hand barrels getting the project of its feet. Intellego translates “to understand” in Latin and is aptly named as Jurgen is just beginning to understand more than the potential of this incredible region. Gouws is one of Swartland’s young guns, a laidback guy with a surfer’s tan and a wry smile. He currently owns no vineyards and no cellar of his own, but developed his own brand Intellego while working at Lammershoek with Craig 'El Bandito' Hawkins. His wall of old barrels... Learn More »
