'From the North'
Mourvédre
Barossa Valley

The From The North Mourvédre is a dark and smoky, elusive wine. As with all of the early '18 releases from Ochota, this is a super-fine-boned version of this Rhône variety. Early picked fruit from the Barossa Valley takes on a new look for the region when in the hands of Taras Ochota.

A single site, biodynamically farmed, in the eastern reaches of the Barossa at the foot of the Eden Valley is the source for this extraordinary wine. The vineyard was planted in 1869 on what is in essence fully decomposed and pulverized granite & quartz from the Eden taking on the shape of extremely fine sand. The fruit was handpicked and left completely intact. After being brought back to Taras' humble shed it was cold soaked for five days. Fermentation occurred naturally and the only extraction of the must was a big of hand pigeage of the top portion of the ferment with the grapes at the bottom fermenting semi-carbonically. After 12 days everything was gently basket pressed to seasoned French barrique where the wine rests for three months. The barrels are blended to tank and bottled unfined and unfiltered with the only addition at any point being a mere 20ppm SO2.

Licorice, Russian caravan tea, black forest cake and medicinal spice ooze from the glass. The exotic black cherry, Moroccan wisp and deep earthy undergrowth has a voluptuous dark aura that seduces one into a haze. The palate is long, lithe and richly winds into a sheen of finely tuned tannins that flow across the palate like being wrapped in a warm opiate soaked velvet blanket.

OCHOTA BARRELS

ADELAIDE HILLS

The Ochota Barrels tale began on a surf trip, late 2000 along the Mexican west coast in a Volkswagen campervan. A final destination after traveling some of the world’s best wine and surf regions, Taras and Amber Ochota conceived the idea to make super premium wines back home in South Australia. The concept was to concentrate on the zenith variety of Mclaren Vale (Grenache) and the Barossa Valley (Shiraz), find an exceptional old vineyard site in each region and create plush, small batch, single vineyard wines. With the winery situated in Lenswood, and steep, high altutude, cool climate, north facing... Learn More »
