Doug’s Vineyard is situated on the outskirts of the township of Romsey, in the Macedon Ranges. Owned by the Newnham family it was planted over 20-years-ago to predominantly MV6 and smaller amounts of 114 and 115 clone pinot noir.

A cool hamlet, the vines sit at around 1,700 feet altitude, atop a North and North East facing hillside on red rocky volcanic basalt soil, moderating vigor and providing amazing intensity to the fruit, ripening small, beautifully formed clusters at low sugar levels.

The classic 2017 season was a return to slow steady ripening providing low yields of concentrated grapes with beautiful balance and freshness, in this case around 1.4 per acre. Once hand harvested in the cool of morning, with careful sorting in the vineyard, 100% was transferred as whole cluster to open fermenters. The must was then allowed to soak 4-5 days at its cool ambient temperature until fermentation commenced. There after the grapes were gently extracted by a combination of pumping over and pigéage by foot.

The wine then pressed after a total of three weeks on skins and transferred to a single new (Laurent “Magic Cask” thick stave, blonde toast) three young (2-4-year-old Laurent “Magic Cask”) and eight old (6-10-years-old) oak Burgundian pièce for lees aging for 12 months, followed by six months in stainless steel on fine lees. The wine is lightly racked and bottled unfined and unfiltered with the only addition to the wine being a small dose of sulfur the week before bottling.

Bright ruby. Very classical and very typical of Doug’s Vineyard, filled with the typical exotic spice, rose, some clod earth and sweet herbs and concentrated sour cherry and raspberry fruit. Long, fine and deep, with silky but present tannin and cleansing, sappy acidity.

Winery & Regional Information
MACEDON RANGES

In the context of mainland Australia, this is a totally atypical wine region; downright chilly in its windswept south-east and only marginally warmer in its north-west. The vital statistics that appear below show the critical importance of correct vineyard site location in the almost glacial climate of the region's south-east. This sprawling, hilly and windswept area extends from the Lancefield-Macedon... Learn More »

It’s fascinating to observe winemaking skills being passed down to a new generation. Especially when the younger generation reinterprets and advances the knowledge they’ve inherited. A special kind of progression so to speak is in full force with Joshua Cooper Wines.   Learn More »
