This is sourced from an old, gnarly, bush vine vineyard on the north western tip of the Muldersvlei bowl. The vineyard was planted by horse and plough over 65 years ago. The small shards of koffieklip (ferricrete) on the soil surface pay testament to what lies under the light textured colluvium (transported topsoil).

The winemaking is kept simple and true — whole bunch pressed, only the free run juice was used for natural fermentation in 3rd fill French oak barrels. The lees was stirred (battonage) for the first month, after which the wine was allowed to mature on the lees for 10 months prior to bottling (unfiltered).

It has an extraordinarily expressive nose – mandarin orange, peach and apricot, some waxiness, some nuttiness and a touch of spice. The palate is super-concentrated and intense but lithe. Sweet fruit upfront but suitably savory on the finish, tangy acidity lending drive. It’s a dramatic wine.

Winemaker + Viticulturist generally is an equation resulting in wine. Rarely is it 'compelling' wine and certainly not seen that often in a second vintage.  Viticulturist consultant Etienne Terblanche (AKA Dr. Pinotage) and the utterly talented Stephanie Wiid (day job is running ferments and blending at Fairview).  They have sought out various nooks and crannies given their supreme knowledge of the Cape with a common vision of style and growth.
