The Adelina Shiraz vineyard is a two-acre plot that was originally planted in 1910. These old vines are gnarled and low yielding and set into shallow red soil that overlay a base of slate and limestone. Already not producing many grapes, this shallow soil forces Adelina’s old Shiraz vines to struggle for moisture, thereby lessening the numbers of grape produced even further, leaving those that remain with a remarkable intensity of flavor.
The two acres of vines rarely produce enough grapes to produce more than 225 cases per year making this Adelina Shiraz a rare wine indeed. (An allocation of just 50 cases for the entire United States is not unusual!)
After careful picking at the end of the summer, the grapes are destemmed before being lightly crushed to release their unctuous juices. The grapes are then soaked for six to seven days before being left in contact with the grape juice whilst fermentation begins for up to 21 days. The fermentation and maturation then continues in oak for 14 months before bottling and release.
This is very deep and expressive. Vivid ruby. Intensely floral nose displays violet, jasmine & licorice, with strong mulberry and blackberry qualities. Spicy and perfumed in the mouth, with excellent clarity to its intense blackberry and candied violet flavors. Brisk & penetrating, with excellent finishing clarity and lingering spiciness. This will age beautifully, but tough to turn away now.
