Ochota Barrels

Pinot Noir
Adelaide Hills

This is a Pinot Noir from a single vineyard, hand-picked by the Ochota clan and made by Taras' much better half Amber. The vineyard source is ‘the size of a tennis court’ with clones from Ashton Hills vineyard planted 15 years ago. It’s 100% whole bunch, sent to a single barrel, sees no additions and sent to bottle unfiltered and unfined. Only 288 bottles produced. Yes, bottles.

The adage of being able to see/taste differences in male v. female winemaker are clearly apparent here. The wine is sexy, delicate and feisty. It’s going to challenge some people for sure. The herbal, alpine herb greenery notable among the sluice of red and black cherry fruit, the suede tannins and clip of bright acidity. It’s totally unfettered, nudist camp kind of wine, with nuttiness overlaid on aloe vera and red briary fruit in bouquet segueing to the distinctly glossy palate. Time open does wonders for the fruit though, richness and fruitiness comes to the fore. And though jostling around the palate, there is definition in coolness and glass fringes, then building tannin pucker too. Delicious, exciting, captivating, but come to the wine armed with a celebration of the whole bunch.

OCHOTA BARRELS

ADELAIDE HILLS

The Ochota Barrels tale began on a surf trip, late 2000 along the Mexican west coast in a Volkswagen campervan. A final destination after traveling some of the world’s best wine and surf regions, Taras and Amber Ochota conceived the idea to make super premium wines back home in South Australia. The concept was to concentrate on the zenith variety of Mclaren Vale (Grenache) and the Barossa Valley (Shiraz), find an exceptional old vineyard site in each region and create plush, small batch, single vineyard wines. With the winery situated in Lenswood, and steep, high altutude, cool climate, north facing... Learn More »
