McLaren Vale

Make NO mistake about it - Mohawk Cabernet Sauvignon is a pedigreed, classic McLaren Vale estate red. This wine was originally called 'Tomahawk,' though one unnamed winery in Napa Valley had a vineyard designate called the 'Tomahawk Block' and a few cease and desist letters later, we have 'Mohawk.'

'Mohawk' (for once), doesn't refer to anything punk rock driven..that's reserved for the Adelaide Plains' 'Raw Power.' Instead this is a glimpse into the life of a desperate, broke group of young winemakers that would do ANYTHING, sans cash, to get a chance at these great vineyards in the Vale. They affectionately became known as 'savages' due to their treatment of the ho'hum commercial wine industry and that conglomerates' treatment of some great vines.

There are beautiful leafy Cabernet (a good things) aromas with notes of blackberry and and cedar, fine soft tannins on palate with the sweet blackberry fruits backing them up. Lovely cedary oak to bring it all together. There is more richness and drive to this wine than ever before. A HUGE step up from previous vintages.

In so doing, the foundations were being put in place for two wine dynasties that were to dominate the region for over a century. McLaren Vale became the model of the small winery before such enterprises became fashionable in other states, and it... Learn More »

MCLAREN VALE

You'll recollect the beginnings: young Flying Winemakers doing the European Vintage, whinging that, back home in Oz, they had no freedom to make the wines they wanted to. Wineries there just kept getting bigger and fewer and being junior winemaker on a big team making a mega-brand was just plain...f-ing boring. Learn More »
