The Syrah comes from what might be the coolest microclimate of the Yarra; the south-west sloping, Tibooburra Vineyard in the south-eastern corner of the Valley. Luke notes that the handling was pretty similar to the previous vintage "...same mix of clones, wild ferment, same oak handling [in old, large format wood] though there is a little less whole bunch this year - 30% [down from 40%] as the year didn't have those darker fruit flavors to carry it." Regarding the wine itself, Luke continues, "The big difference was the weather leading up to harvest, 2013 was a warmer year with plenty of sunshine so the wine carries a bit more fruit muscle and weight, more red fruited than the 2012. We still managed to pick early enough to hold onto lots of fresh acidity and the wine will build pepper and spice as it goes along."
"Luke's come upon a new style of wine that is pinpoint in truth, accuracy and reflection - all with low alcohol (13.2-13.5%), incredible length on the palate (the 2011 lingers with gleaming freshness for nearly a full minute) and a wild yeast/whole cluster style that Clape would be proud of. The palate presence harkens to Gonon (elegance) but the staying power of this feline incarnation has more in common with Rostaing and/or late 1960's Best's Great Western than anything you've likely placed before your lips." - Jon Rimmerman, Garagiste
Clape...Gonon...Rostaing...Luke would shy away from all comparisons to these Syrah greats though he is quite modest, and that is a good thing. His wines are unquestionably some of the greatest wines to come out of Australia and the wine world is a better place because of them.
Cracked pepper on chargrilled steak, blackberry and violet garnish. Stony and silky at once, with ash and dried herbs running through juicy blackberry and red fruit. Deep etched acid. Slatey tannin runs long on the finish and there's this fragrant herbal perfume that carries on long after you swallow. A little bit riper than the 2012, and none the worse for it.

In the liner notes to A Tribute to Jack Johnson, Miles Davis refers to guitarist John McLaughlin's playing as "far in." Those familiar with this record will know what Davis was alluding to; McLaughlin's playing was so natural that it had become indistinguishable from the music he was playing. If you know Luke Lambert and his wines then you will recognize this analogy. Refusing to slavishly follow the conventions and rituals of by-the-book winemaking, Luke Lambert crafts the kind of wine that his vineyards would want him to make; deep, wholesome and "far in".
