Barossa Valley

Take a trip back to the early 1970s to the area that came to be known as Rusden; 80 year old Grenache and Shiraz bush vines were pushed out to make way for mechanized grape production. At the direction of the large companies at the time, the cleared land was replanted with high yielding white varieties to fulfill demand in the bulk market. Twenty years later, out of respect and as a tribute to the hard work and wisdom of the early German pioneers who planted the bush vines, the Canute's spent many late spring months, grafting the twenty-five year old vines back to their original varieties.

2012 was a cracker of a year across the board, perfect ripening conditions led to excellent concentration of color and flavor. This wine display rich berry, plum characters with underlying nutmeg and five spice. Good acidity and gentle tannins lead to a long clean finish. As per 2010 Driftsand, Christian reintroduced a small proportion of MatarĂ³ into the blend for some complexity.

BAROSSA VALLEY

Rusden is one of the success stories of the new Barossa. Dennis and Christine Canute purchased 40 acres of rather run-down vineyard back in 1979. Dennis carried on his day job as a teacher to give Christine, who was a fifth generation grape grower, the opportunity and funds to begin the work of rejuvenating the vines. Learn More »
