Grillo, also known as Riddu, is a white wine grape variety which withstands high temperatures and is widely used in Sicilian wine-making and, in particular, for Marsala. Grillo is crisp and light in texture, with moderate acidity and notable sweetness.
Uriel, the archangel of repentance. Uriel played a very important role in ancient texts as the rescuer of Jesus' cousin John the Baptist from the Massacre of the Innocents ordered by King Herod. The translation of Uriel is ‘God of Light.’ Uriel was the angel who checked each of the doors during the Passover in order to ensure safety for God’s people. Grillo is a very resilient grape and one that withstands a lot of heat and wind on Sicily. It is probably best known as the foundation for Marsala but in its ‘dry’ form has many interesting characteristics. It is the most important white grape on Sicily and therefore the ‘principal light.’
The vineyard is located in Western Sicily, in the area of Chirchiaro, between Salemi and Vita, roughly 25 miles from Marsala. They are planted east facing following the vertical trellis system on sandy and clay rich soil, using guyot pruning. At an altitude of around 1,600 feet above sea level and with a proximity to the sea there is a definitive freshness to the wine. After de-stemming and skin maceration for a few hours, the grapes are subject to soft-press before fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks. The wine is then left on its lees for a few months before being bottled.
Light straw color with green hints. It has a rich bouquet of tropical fruits with notes of apricots, peaches and hints of cinnamon. Well-balanced medium- bodied wine with fresh mineral notes and tropical fruit characters and a very pleasant citrusy finish. Great matching with oily fish like mackerel, swordfish or tuna, with spicy Asian dishes or just a bowl of juicy Italian olives.

Why limit yourself to just one region? Who really says that 'more' isn't better? As long as it is done the right way with 'real' people and 'real' vineyards, there are absolutely some incredible wines to be had. We like to think that these projects are snapshots of each region. Learn More »
Vine Street Imports has always been at the forefront of quality wine coupled with radical packaging. We have always viewed wine very, very seriously and the vehicle for which it comes not so seriously. There are certainly exceptions to this but when we have ‘full’ control of the product, it generally comes out with a little flair and fun. Learn More »
