'Belial'

One of the four crown princes of hell. Roughly translated to ‘without yoke’ in Hebrew. It is believed that Belial is the purest definition of ‘lawlessness.’ The correlation is that much of what has come to be known as ‘Supertuscans’ or ‘IGT’ is simply lawless. People blending international varietals with indigenous varietals, etc. That is not the case here though.

This is 100% Sangiovese sourced from a single vineyard near Siena, in the Chianti Colli Senesi zone. This wine puts the 'super' in Supertuscan and certainly at this price. Winemaker, Riccardo Campinoti is a firm believer that the wine is made in the vineyard and when he found this one with mature vines (25-45 years of age) he knew he had something special. This is the first vintage from this site and the results are quite apparent. The grapes were hand harvested and fermentation included 3 weeks of skin contact to extract rich flavors and color. Fermentation, both alcoholic and malolactic occurred in stainless steel tank and the wine rested in tank for an additional 6 months prior to bottling.

This is the sixth vintage of 'Belial,' the wine that started Poggio Anima. Though the vineyard source has changed over that period of time, the quality has only improved. 2013 had a really cool spring delaying budbreak a few weeks. The peak of summer never saw the blazing temperatures that many of the prior vintages saw, thus producing wines of finesse and yet still deep color and flavor.

Bright red. Lovely floral nuances to the red cherry and raspberry aromas. Bright and fresh, with flavors of candied red cherry and flinty red berries with a touch of sweet pipe tobacco. The clean, long finish offers hints of underbrush and herbs.

REGIONAL ITALY

Why limit yourself to just one region? Who really says that 'more' isn't better? As long as it is done the right way with 'real' people and 'real' vineyards, there are absolutely some incredible wines to be had. We like to think that these projects are snapshots of each region. Learn More »

POGGIO ANIMA

REGIONAL ITALY

Vine Street Imports has always been at the forefront of quality wine coupled with radical packaging. We have always viewed wine very, very seriously and the vehicle for which it comes not so seriously. There are certainly exceptions to this but when we have ‘full’ control of the product, it generally comes out with a little flair and fun. Learn More »
