In the ancient Hebrew Book of Enoch, Gabriel, along with Michael, Raphael, Uriel and Suriel, hears the cries of humanity under the strain of the Nephilim (offspring of fallen angels with humans, thought to be giants). It was their beseeching of "the Ancient of Days” that prompted God to call Enoch to the prophetical office. After Enoch informed the archangels of humanity’s fall from grace, the Ancient of Days sent the angels to earth to complete various tasks. Gabriel was to ignite a civil war amongst the Nephilim, thus causing internal strife. Gabriel is recognized as the most important archangel in other texts in various religions. From revealing the Quran to Muhammad, being known as the 'Earth's Moon' in the occult and announcing the birth of Jesus to Mary, his importance is noted throughout historical texts.
As is such, Pecorino is a grape of high importance to quality white wines of Abruzzo and Marche though it may not be as well known as Trebbiano or Verdicchio. Pecorino is a very old grape but was only recently rediscovered and used for monovarietal wines. Named for the ancient tradition of herding sheep (Pecora is the Italian word for sheep), the Pecorino grape is one of the first to ripen and sheep are attracted to the fruit. Like so many grapes that have teetered on the precipice of extinction, Pecorino is a somewhat stingy yielder and over time many growers abandoned it in favor of more prolific vines like Trebbiano.
Less than one kilometer from the cliffs descending into the Adriatic Sea sits a vineyard perched on a steep slope planted with Montepulciano and Pecorino. The pecorino is hand-harvested on the early side to preserve freshness and not get into the straw color/baked orchard fruits that often occur with this grape. The grapes are destemmed and then pressed to tank, preserving the skins. The skins are tossed back atop the juice and allowed to macerate for 18 hours prior to being pulled off and fermentation occurring naturally. The juice is racked off of the gross lees and left to settle for 8 months prior to bottling.
Crystallized lime peel, nectarine and dry herbs on the nose. Juicy and lively with a nice density conveying a dusty citrus zest character and an impression of orchard fruits.

Why limit yourself to just one region? Who really says that 'more' isn't better? As long as it is done the right way with 'real' people and 'real' vineyards, there are absolutely some incredible wines to be had. We like to think that these projects are snapshots of each region. Learn More »
Vine Street Imports has always been at the forefront of quality wine coupled with radical packaging. We have always viewed wine very, very seriously and the vehicle for which it comes not so seriously. There are certainly exceptions to this but when we have ‘full’ control of the product, it generally comes out with a little flair and fun. Learn More »
