The Pyrenees region of Victoria is renowned for producing elegant cool climate red wines of great finesse and it is Pyren Vineyard's endeavor to mirror this reputation from its 70 acre vineyard situated in the heart of the region.

Established in 1999 by Brian & Kevyn Joy in the picturesque Warrenmang Valley of the cool climate pocket of the Pyrenees region west of Melbourne. The property consistently produced low yielding fruit of exceptional quality. The property is presently operated by Brian's son Leighton and viticultural guru and sheep grazier Graeme Miles.

The development of an on-site winery in 2009 has provided Pyren with even greater direction and has allowed for further improvements with complete control from vine to bottle.

The most exciting challenge at Pyren is the strive for constant learning and the commitment to push limitations. Perpetual room for improvement and a desire to produce the most talked about wines in the Pyrenees, is the long term focus and goal.

Together with the Grampians, Henty and Ballarat, the Pyrenees makes up part of the wider region of Western Victoria. The Warrenmang Valley was initially discovered through a conversation between Kevyn and long standing business associate and founder of renowned Dalwhinnie, Ewan Jones. Shiraz & Cabernet Sauvignon were planted in '99 with further plantings including Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot were planted the following summer.

The identity of a 'Pyren' wine is just beginning to show itself. The profile of floral and earthen aromas, refined structure and the recurring appeal of ripe red fruits and lively acids. The east/west plantings on shallow red and brown loams over a red clay/loam subsoil with a considerable amount of sedimentary sandstone bring the yin-yang approach of power with litheness and feminine aromatics.

Quartz formations are prevalent through the Pyren site and sedimentary soils in general - low in fertility with exceptional natural drainage , such terrain indicates the potential to yield intensely flavored fruit with zingy grip.

The Broken Quartz & Block E label artwork has been created to reflect the terrain on which Pyren Vineyard is situated, representing the beautifully colored landscape and the difficult face of farming the site. Viticulturist Graeme Miles knows the site well having grown up on the property adjacent Pyren Vineyard. He still runs his 600 sheep through the vineyard during the winter/fall months thereby keeping weeds down and soil health up. It is a simple means to a healthy balance.
