XABREGAS WINERY WEBSITE

THE STORY
The Xabregas story begins with one man, Terry Hogan, founder of Xabregas. His passion for wine was seeded from a visit with his elegant wife, Wendy, to the coastal town of Lisbon, Portugal in the 1960's. He fell in love with the "European culture of wine appreciation and celebration" so foreign to his native home in Western Australia at the time.

Today, the estate is overseen by Terry and managed by his energetic son Paul. The wines are under the guidance of the talented Andrew Hoadley, who also makes his La Violetta wines at Xabregas. Andrew's hands-on-in-the-vineyard and hands-off-in-the-winery approach has worked a treat in this cool, dry climate. Focussing on Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc for the whites and Syrah for the reds, each wine is a real reflection of site and minimal handling. Xabregas wines are elegant and effortless with beautiful poise and balance.

Since the establishment of the Xabregas estate in 1996, Paul has discovered that each of the three vineyards: the Figtree Lane vineyard, the Spencer Road vineyard and the Stockyard vineyard have unique distinct personalities. The focus goes beyond the concept of new world wines, it doesn’t adhere to the stereotype of the world view of an Australian style, rather Xabregas focuses on bringing the unique expression of their vineyard estate to the fore, with every bottle of wine coming from the estate. Terroir is the core of what makes Xabregas great. It is viewed as a composite of many physical and intangible factors. Recently, it has been poetically defined as "somewhere-ness"....
Xabregas are true ‘somewherenists’ as the focus goes beyond the concept of new world wines, it doesn’t adhere to the stereotype of the world view of an Australian style, rather Xabregas focuses on bringing the unique expression of a single vineyard estate to fore, with every bottle of wine coming from the estate.

THE LINEUP
There are three 'tiers' of wines in the family, they share the same characteristic of delineation as the AOC system in Burgundy. Think of 'Bourgogne,' 'Villages,' and 'Premier Cru/Grand Cru.' Here is the family of wines:

Estate | The Estate range offers a pure expression of Mount Barker fruit made in a medium weight. These supple wines offer elegance only capable from a region as cool and delicate as Mount Barker.

Artisan | Xabregas believes in the importance of place and the unique expression of the vineyard, but there is also an appreciation of the talents of the craftsman behind the wine. The Artisan range is the winemakers’ gift back to the vineyard, a fully expressive set of wine styles that have added funk and complexity.

X by Xabregas | The single vineyard ‘X by Xabregas’ Rieslings are the ultimate expression of two of the three vineyards; Figtree and Spencer. These wines are crafted with minimal intervention to showcase the varietal’s ability to display distinct and unique vineyard characters from which they have evolved. These Rieslings are beautiful examples of the fine balance between pH, acidity and sugar, which is so important to this grape.

THE REGION
Mount Barker is considered maritime influenced, unlike Frankland River for example, which is continental. As a result, the area suffers less diurnal temperature variation than the inland regions. During growing season, Mount Barker has similar climatic conditions to Mornington Peninsula, Yakima Valley (Washington State) and Hawkes Bay (New Zealand) and is significantly cooler than Clare Valley, Margaret River and Adelaide Hills, meaning these are certainly some of the coolest growing conditions on the mainland.

Xabregas' vineyards are situated at the Southern end of the defined Mount Barker region, and follow the tail of the Hay River and what remains of the so-called Mount Barker Range, which remains visible from the air. Geological reports found that the Mount (of Mount Barker) is as old as the Porongurup Range, which is made of Granite. The Mount Barker Range is largely Ironstone, which is perfect ground for Riesling.
